SDCS catalytic cracking atomizer
In China refineries, the residue oil fluid catalytic cracking (RFCC) began in 1970s and now a series of design/operation techniques have been developed. At present, both the total capacity of residue oil and the residue oil ratio processed in China RFCC units are the largest in amount in the world. Since 1970s, the research & development for FCC/RFCC feedstock nozzle have been carried out by a number of China companies. At present, the domestic nozzles are widely used in China refineries. There are more than 170 FCC/RFCC units in China now; but foreign feedstock nozzles were only used in 4 units. It demonstrates that the domestic nozzles are not inferior to the foreign ones since the China refineries have strong purchasing power in these years.
Ms. Qiubei Chen, a former senior researcher at Sinopec LPC, has ever invented the LPC-1 feedstock nozzle which was the most widely used nozzle in China FCC/RFCC units in 1990s.
Dr. Yiping Fan, the chief researcher of feedstock nozzle at our company, has ever investigated the mixing and flow of catalysts/feedstock spray in FCC/RFCC riser reactor for almost 10 years at the state key laboratory of heavy oil, China University of Petroleum. He has put forward two key viewpoints for developing a feedstock nozzle. First, the size of the atomized oil droplets should match with that of the catalysts. Second, the mixing of oil droplets with catalyst in riser reactor should be rapid and uniform. Dr. Fan’s relevant research has been published in AIChE Journal in 2002 and 2010, respectively.
Ms. Chen and Dr. Fan have made a joint effort to develop a novel FCC/RFCC feedstock nozzle for our company (it is often called by the CS nozzle in China). This nozzle was granted a series of China patents in the past decade. It was first used in a 0.07Mt/a RFCC unit in Shandong Province, China, in 2003; and it has exhibited excellent performance from then on. In 2007, our SDCS nozzle became the widest employed feedstock nozzle in China. It has covered more than 100 China FCC/RFCC units nowadays, including a 2.8Mt/a RFCC unit of Sinopec, Hainan Petrochemical Ltd Co., whose maximum capacity reaches 3.6Mt/a. The applications in these FCC/RFCC units have shown the fact that by using our SDCS nozzle, the liquid yield (the total yields of Gasoline, LPG and Diesel) increase drastically while some undesirable products such as coking and dry gas decrease evidently (cocking in riser reactor is eliminated). On the other hand, the SDCS nozzle can be used in high efficiency for 3-5years. In this sense, we may say that our nozzle has won a distinguished achievement.
The total pressure drop of our SDCS nozzle is less than 0.4MPa with the atomizing steam only 3-5W%. The nozzle has one feedstock inlet and two atomizing steam inlets. If using our SDCS nozzle, we may anticipate that the liquid yield might increase at least 0.5% even if in Europe and USA refineries. It is undoubtedly the scheme with a maximal benefit and a minimal investment.
